Dick’s Sporting Goods may be preparing to enter the Hawaii market, according to public documents that show the big-box retailer registered with the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to do business in the state last month.
The registration, which was filed on June 21, could mean the big-box retailer is preparing to enter a market which hasn’t had a large sports retailer since Sports Authority closed all eight of its Hawaii locations in 2016.
Sports Authority’s Hawaii stores were located at Windward Mall in Kaneohe, the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo, Ward Village, Waikele Center in Central Oahu, Kapolei Commons in West Oahu, Kona Commons, the Maui Marketplace in Kahului and the Kukui Grove Center in Lihue.
During an earning’s call last year, Dick’s Sporting Goods Chairman and CEO Edward Stack said that the company is focused on areas where Sports Authority exited with no direct competitor in the market.
Hawaii, however, was not mentioned during the call, as Stack said the company’s focus would be on Florida, California and the Pacific Northwest.
