Mamma Mia the Musical Lands at Adelaide Festival Centre

Gary Young’s newest production begins with the third biggest Australian Tour of the jukebox musical. And the bigger news is it’ll be arriving in Adelaide Festival Centre.

This year the musical is “Mamma Mia” and just like its name the musical is somewhat awkward but in the best way. The story is written by Catherin Johnson bearing almost 22 songs from Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

The plot follows a young girl named Sophie played by Sarah Morrison, daughter of Donna played by Natalie O’Donnell, is getting married soon. However, Donna has never told Sarah about his father’s identity and the child is so eager to have her father at the wedding. Not sure if the mother will tell her or not Sarah snoops around and finds a diary. In the diary she finds about three possible father candidates Candidate no 1 Harry played by Phillip Lowe, Candidate no 2 Bill played by Josef Ber and Candidate no 3 Sam played by Ian Stenlake.

The real chaos begins when three of them finds out why they have been summoned to the wedding. All this while, Donna who is not so happy with all this commotion is consoled by her friends Tanya played by Jayde Westaby and Rosie played by Alicia Gardiner.

The ending to the plot is none too convincing as well. However, what makes this musical bearable is the songs. If you are a fan on ABBA and like their music. Then the show guarantees to uplift your mood. And while you enjoy the music the shallow plot can be forgotten in all the cluster of fun. One of the ABBA’s songs “Thank You for the Music” that has been played in the music strikes right on the mark.

Nevertheless, the cast of the musical is exceptional but Ian Stenlake as Sam and Jayde Westaby as Tanya stood out the most. Ian Stenlake skilled performance and Jayde Westaby high vocals and perfectly pitched voice make the show much more credible.

As the music is the best part of the show the credit should be given to the music direction of Michael Azzopardi including his house band which no doubly includes the at all times outstanding Matthew Carey.

If you are in for a fun night leaving your critical minds at home will be more appropriate with this musical. The characters portray the superficial story in an entertaining and cheering way.

The musical plays in Adelaide Festival Centre on 9th October till 18th November 2018. With Gary Young’s direction, the show is as amusing as can be and is a must watch.
