Review on “Love Never Dies” a “Phantom” sequel

Every once in a while “Love Never Dies” by Andrew Lloyd Webber a pasty sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera” makes it way to the theaters and reminds us how astonishing and grand the original “The Phantom of the Opera” is.

To be honest, no matter how much it relates to the Phantom it just doesn’t have that feel. Not that it is not a good show or has bad characters or anything. The set changes on and the characters are blessed with excellent vocals that compliments the show. Plus the costumes are also very ravishing. On top of that, Lloyd Webber’s music and Glenn Slater’s lyrics bring five stars to the musical.

It’s only the plot which can’t even be called a proper story, should be something with rationality, consistency and responsive control, just straggles from set to set failing to bring any surprise to the audience. Also, the characters are obstinately superficial.

Some of the songs are quite effective like the overbearing “’Til I Hear You Sing,” which ever so often repeats throughout the musical plus the title song and the quartet “Dear Old Friend” has an unwavering cutesiness that makes it sell.

The story goes like this After the Phantom disappears from that robe-covered chair at the end of “The Phantom of the Opera,” he mysteriously reaches America with a bit of help of Madame Giry (Karen Mason) and Meg Giry (Mary Michael Patterson), who were the residence of the Paris Opera.

He starts going by the name Mr. Y, running a theater in New York’s Coney Island by the name “Phantasma” featuring the lead performer Meg and bunch of other lunatic characters among which    Fleck (Katrina Kemp), Gangle (Stephen Petrovich) and Squelch (Richard Koons) are the most noticeable.

The young vocalist Christine Daae (Meghan Picerno), who has stolen Phantom’s heart almost 10 years from now has become an opera star and ended up marrying Raoul (Sean Thompson) bearing a child name Gustave (Christian Harmston). The three of them intrigued by the prospect of a new opera house come to New York and end up at the Phantom’s Coney Island Domain.

The fire that Phantom had in her hearts for all those long years rekindles and he tries to reawaken the passion between him and Christine, who on the other hand is drained by the Raoul constant drinking habits and loads of debts.

Then there’s the matter of Gustave, who’s become a regular worry for the girls because they were in pursuit to benefit from the Phantom’s assets which he has gathered somehow.

Murphy and Picerno are the remarkable performers with their vocal skills as high as to shake the whole theatre to as soft and lovely like a caress of rose petals. Pacino’s act in “Love Never Dies” is undoubtedly the best bit of the whole show and Murphy’s tone in “ ’Til I Hear You Sing” is fascinating along with his vocals at “The Beauty Underneath” which brings somberness to the solitary Rock enthused number.

Young Harmston has a shocking power in his tone along with agreeable softness. He has substitute Jake Heston Miller’s role in the musical. Other than that Patterson is also quite a fine signing “Only for You” and “Bathing Beauty.”

“Love Never Dies” begun Tuesday, 30th Oct, at the Tulsa PAC, and continues over Sunday, 4th Nov.
